The Opening and the Misconception
A false belief I had, that many Christians young in faith also hold, is about Jesus’ claim in deity.
For the longest I believed that Jesus’ divinity was only inferred and that he never actually vocalized that he actually WAS God. Because Jesus never truly explicitly uses the divine title.
The Foundational Claims: Where Interpretation is Key
Interpreting Jesus' Divine Claims
We have verses on verses that point to what Jesus said that we then have interpreted as his claim to divinity.
Examples of these verses being:
John 8:58: "Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.'"
John 10:30: "I and the Father are one."
The Seven "I Am" Sayings: These statements link Jesus directly to divine provision and sustenance:
"I am the bread of life" (John 6:35)
"I am the light of the world" (John 8:12)
"I am the door/gate" (John 10:9)
"I am the good shepherd" (John 10:11)
"I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25)
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6)
"I am the true vine" (John 15:1)
Forgiving Sins (Mark 2:5–7; Matthew 9:2–6; Luke 5:20–24):
When Jesus told the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven," the scribes thought, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Jesus then publicly demonstrated his divine authority by healing the man.
But today I want to show you that Jesus made a very clear claim out of his own mouth which I personally deem greater than all previously mentioned verses… Even greater than “before Abraham was, I AM.”
The Explicit Proof: Jesus Claims the Title of Almighty God
The Final Word: Alpha and Omega
But before I get to that let me express why I speak on this. Why is it important to know this? Because it adds substance to who he is. We no longer have to live in a belief of interpretation of his divinity (although it is backed up by his actions and wondrous works) but can walk out in truth and FIRM knowing that Jesus claimed to be God.
As we take a look in the book of Revelation in chapter 1 we read that out of the mouth of the God the Father proclaiming to be Alpha and Omega.
'“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” ' – Revelation 1:8
Why This Truth Matter's
This is significant because it points forth to his eternal being. The eternal feature of the father is what makes God, God. As Christians we have the understanding and belief that God was neither created and has no beginning or end since he is outside of time. Hence why he IS the beginning… as claimed through God the Son.
'I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. ' – Revelation 22:13
Jesus spoke the same line that God the Father made, that ONLY GOD COULD MAKE. For it to be true, Jesus would then also have to be God, or he would be a liar.
Moving Forward in Firm Faith
Take time and question, “how does knowing Jesus claimed to be God change anything in how you now move forward in your faith?”
May God lead you to more clarity and growth in faith. God Bless!
